INCREASE IN CREMATIONS
In view of the disrepair of tho present coke-fired furnace of the Waikumote crematorium, and the marked increase in cremations, the City Council last "nightyadopted a proposal by the Parks Committee and the city engineer, Mr. «T. Tyler, that the plant be duplicated by installing an oil-fired furnace, tho first of its kind in New Zealand, at a cost of approximately £OBS. Provision for the expenditure will be made in next year's estimates. In a report, the town clerk, Mr. .1. S. Brigham. stated that up to January 2") last there had been 764 cremations at Waikumcte. Figures for the past three financial vears were:—l932-3.'L 77; 1933-34, 108; 1934-35 (part), 139. These were in the ratios of 10, 131 aid nearly 20J per cent respectively to the number of burials at Waikumete, There had been a pronounced increase since crfemation fees Were reduced in December, 1933,.... • j
