OBITUARY

MR. G. R. RICHARDS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] •WHANGAREI, Wednesday The death occurred last evening of Mr. George Rix Richards, aged 56 years, of Kamo. Mr. Richards, who was well known in many parts of North Auckland, was born in Kupunda, South Australia, and came to New Zealand as a young man. Ho was engaged in goldmining on the West Coast of the South Island, being employed in an executive capacity in the Ross mine. While there he married Miss Blanche Holley, daughter of pioneer settlers on the West Coast. He camo to Limestone Island in 1914, where he was employed by Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement,* Limited. Later he assisted in the first reclamation contract in connection with the Whangarei Harbour Board's scheme at Limeburnprs Creek. He was a keen Rugby football supporter, and represented Onerahi on the Whangarei Rugby Union. He also took an active interest in school affairs, having served on several school committees. He is survived by his widow, one son and five daughters.

GRANT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTON NORTH, "Wednesday The death has occurred of Mrs. Jane Shiels Grant, aged 79, relict of the late Mr. George Grant, first headmaster of the College Street School, Palmer - ston North. Deceased was born in Milton, and was a daughter of Mr. A. J. Duth.ie, an early settler in South Otago. She is survived by one son, Mr. J. A. Grant, Pahnerston North, and six daughters, Mesdames E. B. Gordon (Marton), L. Baumgart (Hastings), S. Lamont (Auckland), Misses F. S.. Grant (Wanganui), N. Grant (Palmerston North), and K. Grant (Lower Hutt). MR. W. A. CARPENTER [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr. W. A. Carpenter at the age of 84 years. He was clerk of the Mount Herbert County Council for 24 years, and was a former Mayor of Sumner. Ho was a well-known horticulturist, having evolved "Lord Kitchener," a popular gladiolus. MR. ROBERT BATTOHQP INVERCARGILL, "Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr. Robert Bauchop, aged 65 years, who was well known in the sawmilling industry. Ho was born at Port Chalmers and was for' several years in charge of his father's extensive sawmilling interests in Otago and Southland. Two years ago he visited 'Great Britain with Mr. Entrican, of the Forestry Department, to establish trade in the export of silver beech, and since then he has been identified with that industry. Deceased was a brother of Colonel Bauchop, who was killed on Gallipoli, and Mr. Duncan Bauchop.
