DEATH AT 97 YEARS
RESIDENT OF THAMES The death occurred at the Thames Hospital on Friday of Sirs. Sarah Elizabeth Willetts at the ago of 97 years. Mrs. Willetts was born in England, but left for South Africa as a young girl with her parents. She was married to the late Mr. William Phillips in South Africa and a few years later sailed with her husband and three children for New Zealand, arriving at Auckland in 1864. They lived in Auckland and Waiuku for some time and when gold was discovered at Thames joined the first rush to the new goldfields. Only recently Mrs. Willetts was able to recall the excitement of the landing and the growth of the township of tents which sprang up in a night. Her first husband died about 55 years ago and she later married Mr. William Willetts, whose death occurred about 15 years ago.
