CATHOLIC MARTYRS
COMING CANONISATION ACTS OF KING HENRY VIII. VATICAN CITY, Feb. 10 In the presence of Pppe Pius XI., the preliminary decrees were read in connection with the forthcoming canonisation of the English martyrs, Sir Thomas More and John Fisher, who were slain in the reign of King Henry VIII. The decrees stated that the persecutions of the 16th century began owing to the lecherous nature of Henry VDI., who was not able to obtain from the Pope—the custodian of the indissoluble tie of matrimony—the 4 divorce for which he lusted. Therefore he proclaimed himself in anger the head of the Church in England in order to proceed by his ow9 authority to a second sacrilegious mar-
riage. The Pope recounted at length the history of the martyrs and expressed pleasure at their approaching canonisation.
