WASHOUT ON ROAD
CLOUDBURST NEAR ARAPUN! SMALL CAR ENGULFED [by tfxkgbaph OWN correspondent] TE ATVAMUTTJ, Monday A cloudburst occurred late on Saturday evening in the district between Arapuni and Pukeatua. A tremendous downpour of water gouged out a channel across the road a mile from the Te Awamutu side of Acacia Gully about 10ft. deep and 15ft. wide. Mr. McDonald, of the staff of the Arapuni hydroelectric works, who was returning from Wellington with his wife in a small car, did not notice the damage until practically on the edge of the washout. He applied the brakes, but the car slid into the hole and fell over on its side. The occupants escaped with bruises and a shaking.^ Other cars returning to Pukeatua from Arapuni were stopped by a flashlight, and had to make a long detour to reach home. Mr. McDonald's car was hauled out by a wrecking car later, little damaged. On Sunday workmen, who weise engaged all day, provided a temporary road around the washout.
