FLEETWIND BEATS PARQUET SINKING FUND'S VICTORY KING FORD WINS AGAIN *• [BY TELEGRAPH —FROM ARCHER] ROTORUA. Monday The first day's winner, Parquet, was an each-way favourite for the Rennie Stakes, but she was decisively heated by Fleet wind. Gleuation and Parquet showed out first and then Fleetwind ran to the front from Brilliant Acre, Parquet and Glenation, with Velocipede last. Fleetwing led into the straight just clear of Parquet and beat her by a length. Velocipede finished on to get third three lengths away, and Glenation was fourth, with Eudorace and Brilliant Acre next. Fleetwind appeared to have improved slightly as a result of her race on the first day and scored fairly comfortably, although she "had to be urged about half-way down the straight. Parquet ran another solid race and Velocipede was running on at the end after being a long way back early, and also receiving a check at the turn. Brilliant Acre, who does; not look ready, showed some early pace and should improve. Phiakuo's Place Dividend With W. Rennie in the saddle, Air Lassie was an each-way favourite for the Tarawera High-weight Handicap, but she missed a place. Golden England, Air Lassie and Sir Musk were quickly prominent, Golden England and Air Lassie being the leaders along the back from Sir Musk, Lap Up, Kanapa and Ford Acre. Nearing the top Emancipation made a sharp run on the outside and ho took second place at the top. Lap Up was in command before reaching the turn, and led into the straight from Emancipation. First Dance, Phiakuo and Air Lassie. Lap Up stayed on well under pressure to score by three-parts of a length from Emancipation, who defeated Phiakuo by a length Sir Musk was fourth, succeeded by Kanapa, First Dance and Valcuir. Lap Up is a good type of four-year-old who has done very little racing. He was unlucky in the running on the first day. but secured a better passage on this occasion to win in solid fashion after taking the lead before the home turn. Emancipation showed signs of regaining form and battled on well at th« finish after making a. fast run on the outside along the bnck. Phiakuo made an improved showing. He was the outsider of the field on the place machine and paid double figures. Air Lassie and Golden England both had every chance but failed to run up to form. Winlona Scores Nicely In spite of the fact that she drew No. 8 in the field of nine, Winlona was made an each-way favourite for the Flying Stakes and she realised expectations by winning nicely. Street Dancer jumped out clear from No. 1, but Lady Diana soon ran to the iront to lead along the back from Rex Victor, Winlona. Street Dancer, Racela and Aroha Pono. These horses bunched at the top, where Lady Diana just led from Rex Victor. Lady Diana was first into the straight closely followed by Winlona. with Uncle Walker. Rex Victor and Aroha Pono next. Winlona finished very solidly and won going away by a length and a-half from Lady Diana. Whistling Rufus came from a long way gacl: to get third, a length away, and Tybalt was fourth. Next to finish were Street Dancer, Racela and Rex Victor. Winlona has been racing very consistently and thoroughly deserved her success. Sba had to go on tho outside round the .first turn but soon ran into a forward position and proved too solid for Lady Diana at the finish. Whistling Rufus failed to hold his position early, but ran on solidly at the finish. Tybalt was also going on at the end after being badly placed along the back. Sunny Downs was responsible for a surprise in winning the Ohinemutu Hack Cup, /laying over a score on the win machine. The third horse, Wahine Reihi. was also at good odds on the place machine. Wahine Reihi smartly from No. 1 to lead early from Royal Secret, Holly Lu, Hawthorn Tuaheahe and Respectful. Sunny Downs finished very resolutely to win by a length from Huskie. with Wahine Reihi half a length away third. • Engo was fourth, followed by Hawthorn, Barn Dance and Koyal Secret. IfiTst Lap's Game Finish Sunny Downs was improved for his race on the first day and finished in the most determined fashion. Huskie was staying on solidly at the end after running about a good deal in the straight. He might have been more difficult to beat with a stronger horseman in the saddle. Wahine Reihi made a fine attempt to win all the way but she failed just near the end.'(Enge commenced tiis run a trifle soon. Barn Dance drew an outside position and his task was made very difficult by reason of the fact that he had to cover a lot of ground round the first turn and had to be urged to hold his position. He ran very creditably in the circumstances ivnd will do better on a larger course. _ „ - The each-way favourite Sinking fund scored narrowly in the President's Handicap. Wait and See and Sinking Fund were quickly in f™nt and ; vlien fielcl settled down they were the naoemakers, about a length clear of Lady Spy and Prince Colossus, with Firßt Lap next and Trishna failed off., Wait and See and Sinking Fund pntered the straight together, with First Lap and Prince Colossus handy. Prince Colossus was a length away third and Wait and £tee was fourth, followed by Princess Bede, Trishna arid Lady Spy. . , The placed horses ran right up to form. Sinking Fund was all out at the finish to withstand First Lap s challenge. Wait and See had every chance but failed to stay in the laist furlong. Astarth Narrowly Beaten The favourite Astarth failed in the last few strides in the Electric Handicap, to be narrowly beaten by Express, who returned double-figures on the win machine. Prince Ven jumped out first to lead along .the back from Astarth, who was bustled into second position ahead n " T cc £?. Kilberis, Nahlin and Calcutta. Buchanan a good deal of trouble and. has had a comparajvelv easy time since winning at Whangaiei 111 the spring, when she also P al 4 doublefigures Astaith might have won if sh"i had not been made so much use of early to overtake Prince Ven, who got tho best of the start. Kilberis made a very creditable showing and should do better. The start was made without the use of th? '*«>«• 9»" ing to the outside of the-barrier earning away. Tho favourite Cojronis could not act at all in tho ground and ran much below form, actually finishing last. British Columbia struck some trouble early. Exaggeration showed up well to the turn and should be improved by the racing. Having bis third start at the meeting Respectful brought oft a mild surprise in the Farewell Handicap, for which Prolyxo and Lady Zinnia were favourites. Velreina and Respectful made the running.
