PICNICS AT WEEK-END

RAILWAY WORKSHOPS STAFF EXCURSION TO COWES BAY Employees of the Otahuhu railway workshops held their annual picnic at Cowes Bay, Waiheke, on Sunday. There was a large number of excursionists, who travelled by the liangitoto. Particular attention was paid by the committee to entertaining the children. Several races were held tor their benelit and they were liberally supplied with ice creams, solt drinks, sweets and toys. The tide was excellent for swimming and it was in this manner that many of the adults spent a great deal of their time. A sports programme also provided entertainment for many of the picnickers, both men and women. Music by tho Auckland Mounted Rifles' Band added to the enjoyment of those attending the picnic. A K All AN A YACHT CLUB Over 40 yachts and launches attended a picnic arranged by the Akarana Yacht Club at McKenzie's Bay, Rangitoto Island, during tho week-end Sports events were keenly contested. In the main event, the tug-of-war. yachtsmen beat launchmen only after a 15 minutes' struggle. The sports cup for aggregate points was won by the yacht Mnybelle with 15 points, Speedwell being second with 12. There wns a lnrge attendance, and a well-varied programme of sports was conducted. All events were keenly contested, the children being especially well catered for. A tug of war contest between the office staff and the storemen resulted in a victory for the clerks by two straight pulls.
