MOUNT ALBERT COUNCIL

Sir—As the date of the Municipal Elections is drawing near I wish to elicit if possible the leeltng of the ratepavers of the borough of Mount Albert in regard thereto. It seems to me, in view of the general satisfaction apparently given by the present Mayor and councillors, that the cost of an election, running into somo hundreds of pounds, would be quite an unnecessary and unjustifiable expenditure. As an independent, and though averse to the party svstem in local body politics, I consider the council as it is to be sufficiently balanced to satisfy the ambitions of all concerned. I think the ratepayers would be wise to request the withdrawal of any new contestants' nominations tor a seat on the council. All wo should expect of our present Mayor and councillors, who have had a very difficult term of office, is a platform campaign giving an account of their stewardship and proposed programme for the coming term of office. There is one thing I consider Mount Albert to bo badly m peed of and that is a modern open-air swimming bath. Possibly the council would be able to put the money saved if re-elected unopposed toward constructing same in a central part of the borough. Such a scheme should be easily self-supporting thus not necessitating any increase in rates. Preston Avenue.
