CHARGES DELAYED
DATED THREE MONTHS AGO BARRED BY STATUTE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE. Monday Throe charges of assault on females and one of committing an indecent act were preferred against John Pittar, aged 35, before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Whakatane. Mr. Harron appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. After Constable Cummings had read statements made by complainants in the case, Mr. Harron pointed out that two of the assault charges wero dated more than three months ago. He contended they were barred by statute.
The magistrate concurred and dismissed those charges. However, on tho other assault charge he a fine of £5, with £2 costs. On the. application of the police the charge of committing an indecent act was withdrawn.
