HOLIDAYS AT EASTER

CLOSING FOR WHOLE WEEK HIGH SCHOOL AT KAIKOHE A suggestion that as- Anzac Day this year falls in Easter week the board should declare April 24 and 26 special holidays for in its district was received from the Minister of Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday. The suggestion was approved, so that schools will be closed for the whole of Easter week, as well as on Good Friday, April 19. The Minister advised that, if necessary, the holidays allowed at the discretion of school committees could be reduced accordingly. It was decided that terms for the Training College for the present year bo February 11 to May 10, May 27 to August 16 and September 9 to December 13.

Approval was received from the department of the employment of certain teachers from the Hawke's Bay, Taranaki and Wanganui districts as relieving teachers under the rationing scheme in the Auckland district, on .condition that no travelling expenses or boarding allowances were paid. A telegram was received from the Minister of Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, authorising the establishment of a district high school at Kaikohe, provided the buildine was supplied free and that only the regulation allowance was paid for the conveyance of pupils. The establishment of a district high school at Katikati was declined, but permission was given for a seventh standard to be continued and for the appointment of an extra Grade I. assistant.

A deputation was received from members of school committees in the Howick district, urging the consolidation of the Howick, Pakuranga, Whitford No. 1, Whitford No. 2, Maraetai and Beachlands schools. After discussion with the board the deputation agreed to propare an application to the Education Department regarding additional assistance for the transport of certain pupils. Subject to the support of the outlying schools, the board approved the principle of consolidation. The Education Department advised that a grant had been authorised for the erection of a new and larger school building at Te Uku, Raglan. Sympathetic reference was made to the death of Mr. P. E. Stevens, a former headmaster of the Hamilton East School, who entered the board's service in 1875.
