DOG NUISANCE

Sir, —1 must thank you for the courtesy in publishing my letter, and the comments by " Anti-Bark " and "Barker." Since my letter was written, about nine days ago, without exception I have been awakened every night —and last night alone I lost four hours' sleep, because of two dogs yelping. On Thursday the front garden immediately under the bedroom window was rooted up, and the place left in a disgusting condition. In a recent article in your paper, an eminent scientist stated that "Flies were responsible for killing more human beings than wars." Although this seems to be an exaggeration, it must be obvious to any thinking person that owing to the large number of dogs now kept in the city and suburbs, hygienic conditions ate not as good as they should be. The same applies to dogs on beaches Oh! for a £2 dog tax. D.P.

Sir, —It is quite evident from letters appearing in the Herald that some people are more concerned about the welfare of animals than of human beings. No one objects to people keeping animals providing they do not allow them to annoy their neighbours, but when dog owners allow their little darlings to yelp .and howl for hours at a stretch day -and night, then they deserve to have them destroyed. Civil action is too expensive for the average citizen, and if these so-called animal lovers are too thoughtless and selfish to keep their pets quiet, then they must expect exasperated and nerve-racked neighbours to resort to desperate measures to obtain peace and quietness. People do not poison animals for pastime, and my sympathies are with the people who, no doubt, have good cause to still the barking pests forever. A. Lawson.
