RELIEF WORK SYSTEM
POSITION AT WH ANGAREI REQUEST BY MEN DECLINED [from our own correspondent] TVHANGAREI, Tuesday The Whangarei Borough Council at its meeting last evening decided to adhere to the Unemployment Board's revised system of relief under No. 5 scheme which came into operation on January 28. Tho matter was brought forward by the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, as the result of a promise made to the Unemployed Workers' Association, which asked that the men be allowed to work the fourth weekly ration of work in the three weeks. This would give theni the fourth week free to accept any other work of a private nature that might be offering. Tho Mayor explained that this arrangement was not permitted by the board unless the local authority was experiencing any difficulty in regard to the transport or supervision of the men. Tho council must be fair to the board as well as to the men, said Mr. Jones, and as the council had no difficulty in regard to transport or supervision, it could not ask tho board to agree to tho request on those grounds. A motion that the council adhere to the Unemployment Board's regulations governing the fourth week was carried.
