THE MORTGAGE PROBLEM

Sir, —I see Mr. Coates has been conferring with business men over mortgage problems. Would it not be better if he came into the country and talked to the farmers who are chiefly concerned? Mr. Coates says he is more than pleased with the" reception the Government policy has met with, but perhaps he will change his mind if he conies and speaks to the farmers. The farmers consider it is high time something was done to alleviate their sufferings. Mr. Coates says "the legislation of the Government will go a long way toward straightening out the mortgage problem. He knows perfectly well that there is 110 other solution to the problem except mortgages be reduced to the productive value of land. I defy Mr. Coates to prove that any proposal of the Royal commission, or legislation passed, will increase the price of butter a fraction of a penny. So, as we cannot increase the price of butter, mortgages must be reduced. H. Mabx.
