SCOUTS IN AUSTRALIA

LONG HIKE CONCLUDED v. NEW ZEALANDERS PARTICIPATE MELBOURNE, Jan. 10 The greatest Scout hike in the history of Australia ended to-day, when 650 delegates to'the jamboree, including 16 New Zealanders, under the charge of Rover Gilniour, of le Awarautu, arrived at Gilwell Park, Gembrook, the Victorian Scouts' training centre in the Dandenong Ranges, 46 miles from Melbourne. The boys had hiked across country from Frankston through forest country, the journey taking four days. _ t In a message from their camping place last evening, Ro\*er Gilmour said: "This has been the best part; of the fine jamboree. X would have come for this alone. The only thing which spoilt to-day was the fact that we. did not see a snake, although we killed four yesterday." New Zealanders admired the bird life in the Victorian bush. This evening the Scouts will gather for a special ceremony round the camp fire, at which the Chief Scout, Lord Baden-Powell, will be present. LORD BADEN-POWELL TRIBUTE BY THE TIMES VALUE OF THE MOVEMENT LONDON, Jan. 1 It was a happy thought, says the Times in a leading article, to include the first international Scout jamboree outside Europe in the Victorian Centenary celebrations. The jamboree is, a welcome reminder of the internationalism of the Scout movement, and of its great work in demolishing the barriers of national rivalry and co-operating in a common ideal. The High Commissioner for Australia, Mr. S. M. Bruce, at a luncheon in September,' paid tribute to the Scout movement as the most supreme agency in tho direction of world peace, 'ihis, comments the Times, may be the language of enthusiasm, but all will agree that Lord Baden' Powell has made the largest contribution of our time to the peace and happiness of nations.
