DAIRY COWS SELL FREELY

A keen demand for dairy cattle resulted in an advance in prices at the Westfield weekly stock sale yesterday. There was an average yarding of both store and dairy cattle. Quality cows and heifers sold freely at improved prices under keen competition. The demaud for springers was very solid and stock of good quality was readily bought. The top realisation of £5 15s for a fine type of Jersey cow, close to profit, was 20s above the best price of last week. Shorthorn heifers were also sold under keen competition and a fine quality animal realised £5. Prices generally showed a distinct improvement. over the low rates prevailing recently. PUKEKOHE DEMAND STRONG [from ot*r own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Thursday At the stock sale at Pukekoho to-day, conducted by "Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, dairy cattle came forward in small numbers and the quality waß not outstanding. Anything good was in demand. Choice heifers, close to profit, brought £3 15s to £5; cows, close to profit, £2 10s to £3 ss; cows in milk, 15s to £1 14s. There was no demand for backward heifers. The entry of beef cattle was heavy. Heavy fat cows and heifers made from £4 15s to £5 10a; lighter, £4 lis; light, £2 10s io £3 17s; other killable cows, £1 13s to £2 ss; boner cows, 12s to £1 6s; store > cows, £1 5s to £1 16s; light fat steers, £3 18s to £5 7s 6d; potter bulls, 16s to £1 lis. HEAVY MATAMATA ENTRY ' [from our own correspondent] MATAMATA, Thursday The Farmers' Auctioneering- Company held lts usual fortnightly stock sale at Matamata on Wednesday, when there was an exceptionally heavy yarding of mostly fat and fresh-conditioned Jersey cowe, with only a, small proportion of good quality cattle. Good quality Bold firmly at late rates, while second quality and boner cows suffered a decided drop on late ruling prices. Potter bulls also depreciated. There was an extra heavy yarding of store pigs, which sold well at rates equal to those ruling at Frankton. Baconers also came forward in large numbers and prices were in advance of those ruling before the holidays. Porkers, although easies, were well 'up to rulina schedule rates. A line of 55 baconers sold on behalf of Mr. S. Brindle, Hinuera. averaged £'3 8s 6d. There was a good entry of sheep, mostly store lambs. A few pens of fat sheep cold readily at late rates.
