CONVERSION OF CAR
YOUTH SENT TO PRISON \ OTHER CHARGES PREFERRED A mechanic, George William Gordon Clarke, aged 18 (Mr. Aekins), appeared for sentence before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. On January 4 accused was convicted of a series of offences committed in Karangahape Road on January 1. They consisted of luing found in charge of a motor-car while in a state of intoxication, of negligent driving, and of driving without being the holder of a motor driver's licence. He was also convicted of converting to his own use a motor-car valued at £125, the property of James Henry Potter.
The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said accused had informed him that he had not seen his parents, brothers or sisters for a considerable time and did not know where they were now living. He had been working in a garage, but his wages were for only a negligible amount. Accused was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment on the conversion charge, and on the two charges of negligent driving and being found in a state of intoxication in charge of a car he was convicted without penalty. For driving without a licence he was fined £l.
Under the name of George William Gordon Sutton; accused ! was also charged with making at Gisborne on or about July 7 a false document, a cheque for £lO 12s 6d, purporting to have been signed by J. H. McGregor, and knowing ,it to be false did induce James Kelly to act upon it as if it were genuine. On the application of Senior-Detec-tive Hall, accused was remanded to appear at Gisborne on this charge on January 18. .
