RECEIVING ALLEGED

AGENT DENIES CHARGES COMMITTED FOR TRIAL A plea of not guilty was entered by Leslie Halworth Clark, aged 45, commission agent (Mr. Rudd), in the Police • Court yesterday, to three charges of receiving. The prosecution was conducted "by Detective-Sergeant ' McHugh.

The allegations of the police were that 'accused received from John McGregor two bolts of hessian, valued at £2 lis, Id, knowing them to have been "dishonestly obtained; that he received from McGregor one dozen balls of binder twine and one bolt of hessian, valued at £2 17s 3d; and that on various dates he received from the same person quantities of hessian, twine and rope, valued at £77 12s 6d, knowing the goods to have been dishonestly obtained. Evidence was given by several witnesses relating to the purchase of goods from accused.

John McGregor said he had been cartihg on contract for Donaghy and Company, Limited, rope and twine manufacturers, for the past 15 years. About 15 months ago he met accused, who suggested that if witness could get anything he (accused) would dispose of it and they coidd "go with the proceeds. For 12 months witness admitted removing goods from the store and delivering them to accused, either at his room in Vincent Street or else at Ligar Place. From time to time witness re?eived money from accused.

Detective K. W. Mills said he had told accused in an interview that McGregor had admitted stealing goods and had informed the police that accused had sold them about the city. In reply, accused had said: "J hat is correct." Asked if he knew where McGregor was'procuring his supplies, accused said; "Actually, no, but I have imagination." Accused reserved his defence and w as committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
