OVERSEA PASSENGERS

ENTRY FORMALITIES RELAXATION EXPERIMENT Representations were recently made 'to the Health and Customs Departments by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce regarding the possible easing of formalities /on the arrival of oversea vessels. At a meeting of the council of the chamber yesterday a letter was received from the Customs Department stating that an experiment had been made with the waiving of declarations by persons arriving in New Zealand, in. the case of certain vessels which had come to Auckland. So far the system appeared to be satisfactory and was being continued. The issue of " clearance cards " was not considered advisable, but every effort was being made to lessen the delay caused by formalities.

Mr. D. Carter remarked that clearance cards were not favoured because of shortage of staff to deal with them and the fear that they might be transferred to persons not eligible to use them.

It was decided to ask the shipping companies to state whether tho clearance card system would suit them.
