CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

WINNER IN AUSTRALIA PURDY SUCCESSFUL (Received January 10, 12.55 a.m.} MELBOURNE. Jan. 9 Purdy won the Australian chess championship last evening as the result of surprises in the 12th round. Goldstein defeated Crowl last evening, Hynd defeated Hastings, Watson defeated Fillan, Condon defeated Koshnitzky, Coultas defeated Thierjnng, Purdy drew with Green, and Lamparter drew with Greenfield. The championship ended to-day, G. H. Hastings being second, M. E. Goldstein third and C. Watson fourth. Hastings by defeating Koshnitzky, the title-holder, killed the latter's last chance of a prize. The contest is claimed to have been the most successful yet held in Australia. Results of other events are: —Major open: 8. D. Stanley. Minor open: C. P. Lowe. Women's championship: Miss M. Lander first, Mrs. Purdy (wife of the winner of the men's championship) second.
