They were bathing near by, but were indifferent swimmers themselves, but they reached her, and held her np until a member of the Life-saving Club swam out with a life-line. The girl was taken back to the beach, and the two men began to swim to the beach. The 111011 were unable to make progress against the strong nndertow, which carried them further to sea. William Smith, another member of the club, saw their predicament from the shore, seized a life-line and swam to their assistance. The life-line slackened at one stage and a wave flung the loose rope around his neck. In his efforts to free himself, the rope became more tangled and the life-saver struggled fronziedl.v to free himself from the line, which was slowly choking him. After loosening the rope, ho rested for a few minutes to regain his strength, and then swam to the two men. They were brought ashore with little difficulty and quickly recovered.
