THE GOVERNMENT

Sir, —In reply to Mr. A. J. Lilley I may assure him that the extension of the life of Parliament was quite in accordance with constitutional practice and theory. Much abuse of the Government is always being dinned into one's ears, but none of the criticism takes any notice of the difficult economic condition of the country, or else it suggests that the Government is solely responsible for it. Tho Government has, doubtlessly, done many disagreeable and unpopular things; but as the object of a political party is to secure and keep power by pleasing its constituents, it is evident that these things have been done under compulsion; virtually, that the Government lias sacrificed its political future to the public good. No Government commits suicide for nothing. It is incumbent upon the host of enemies of the Government to produce criticism taking into consideration the facts of the case, and worthy of consideration. So far I have not heard or read such. A. Wariiurton.
