OFFERS FOR BANKS IMPROVE

Turnover on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday showed improvement on the previous day, but the volume of business was still below the average. There was a better demand for some issues, notably banks. Inquiry for Government loans was steady, although oilers were raised for one or two issues. Holders operated very sparingly. The 1946 4 per cent stock was sought 2s 6d higher at £lO5 12s (3d. at which price a sale 10s dearer took place. Subsequently a parcel changed hands at £lO5 10s. Bank of New Zealands were sought 3d higher at 48s od, business at 48s lOd being unchanged. Demand for Reserve Banks showed no change at £6 lis, hut, after a sale 3d lower at £6 lis 6d. further business was done at £6 12s tid. Offers for Australian issues, in particular Australasias, Commercials and I'nions, were advanced, quotations, where available, being at late rates. The insurance market was inactive. Quotations were a shade firmer, but inquiry was unchanged to easier. -In loan and agency offers for Dominion Investment and Banking rose sharply by Is 3d to 16s ikl and a small concession by holders accompanied a sale at 16s 6d, which is 3d lower than in November. Firmness in breweries was maintained, New Zealands being .sought Is higher at 525, with "supplies available 6d higher at 52s 6d. Holders of Colonial Sugars lowered their limits by 10s to £42 10s and a buyer appeared at £42. Three parcels of Consolidated Bricks were transferred unchanged at 10s 3d and New Zealand Newspapers sold at 335, also the current rate.
