THEFT OF NEWSPAPER
ELDERLY MAN CONVICTED "Leniency was extended to yon in July, when you were convicted of theft, and it does not seem to have been appreciated," said Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in tho Police Court yesterday, when Claude Henry Cooke, aged 66, gardener, pleaded guilty to stealing a copy of the New Zealand Herald, the property of Percy Jones. Inspector Edwards said accused had been seen by a constable and a Herald runner early yesterday morniug in the act of removing a newspaper from a houso in Ponsonby Road. He had later admitted the offence. Complaints had frequently been received in the past of missing newspapers, although there was no suggestion that accused had been responsible. Accused was fined £l, in defanlt seven days' imprisonment.
