HEALTH CAMP

CHILDREN FROM WAIKATO THREE WEEKS' HOLIDAY [from our own* correspondent] Hamilton, Friday To the accompaniment of cheers and the skirl of bagpipes, the paddle steamer Manuwai set off this morning down the Waikato River taking 208 children for a holiday of throe weeks at Waikato Heads. The children, who wero chosen from hundreds of applicants in tho district as the most likely to benefit from the holiday, will remain at the camp of the Waikato Children's Camp League at Port Waikato until January 25.

For over an hour before the departure of the vessel, children of all sizes and ages were crowding on board, their luggage in suitcases, canvas bags, sugar sacks and receptacles of every kind. All were highly excited at the prospect of the seaside holiday that awaits them. Cases piled high on the deck bore evidence of the abundance of good food being taken to provide for their needs. Not only should the children benefit from the wholesome food, but their health should be improved by regular hours and the open-air life they will lead. Swimming, sun-bathing, fishing, tramping in the native bush and playing on the sand hills await the children and all should return from their holiday greatly improved in health. The organisation of the camp will be in the hands of the chairman of the committee of the league, Mr. W. H. Paul, and the secretary, Mrs. H. C. Ross, assisted by a band of over a dozen voluntary helpers. The children's health will be in the care of Mrs. H. D. Cobb. The camp is dependent on public support and gifts of money and produce will be of great assistance in providing for the children.
