ELABORATE MODEL

One of the most elaborate models ever constructed was exhibited recently at Liverpool, as a feature of the ceremonies marking tlrtJ formal opening of the Mersey Hivcr tube. This underwater tunnel, the largest ever built, carries vehicular traffic between Liverpool and Birkenhead. TJie model showing its course beneath the river is 28ft. long and 12ft high. Over two miles long, the Hersey tube is 46ft. 3in. in diameter. The roadjvay is 36ft. wide, accommodating four lanes of traffic. At either end of the tunnel these lanes divide into pairs, and reach the surface through two portals on each bank of the river. The tunnel is paved with cast iron, the longest stretch of such roadbed in the world. The four traffic lines are marked by blocks of compressed rubber, which project slightly above the level. The inside of the tunnel, to a height of 6ft.. is lined with black glass. Giant pillars for lights have been built at each of the four entrances.
