MOTOR-CAR RACING

SPEEDWAY AT ONEHUNGA

OPENING THIS AFTERNOON

KEEN CONTESTS EXPECTED

The new motor-racing track at Gloucester Park, Onehunga, will be opened by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, this afternoon, when a programme of events will be held under the auspices of the New Zealand MotorRacing Drivers' Association. His Excellency will arrive at 2.30 to perform the opening ceremony. The first race will commenco at two o'clock. The construction of the track, a halfmile unbjinked circuit on reclaimed ground, is .a result of an arrangement reached some months ago between the Onehunga Borough Council and the Drivers' Association. Unemployed labour was largely used in draining the area, building terracos and erecting fences. During the week the surface has been carefully prepared, and it was in perfect order yesterday, when drivers made a final inspection. The track will be watered immediately prior to the commencement of the racing if thero is any likelihood of the competing cars creating sufficient dust to cause the slightest inconvenience either to drivers or to spectators. There are seven events on the programme, five for motor-cars and two for motor-cycles. The car events comprise a championship of five laps, and three handicaps and a consolation race, each of four laps. Both motorcycle handicaps are four-lap events. The performance of individual drivers and riders in practice indicates that spectacular racing will be seen to-day. The capabilities of the competing machines, and the convenient location of the track, are expected to result in a large attendance. The public will be accommodated on terraces, from which they will be able to watch each stage of every events The handicaps declared for the motorcar events are as follows, "3" indicating a supercharged machine:— Event for 1500 c.c.
