WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

* Reports of institute meetings are as follows: —

Gordonton. —A party was held in Mrs. Sainsbury's garden when a demonstration of cake icing was given. Two competitions, one for a Christmas present not to cost more than Is 6d, and the other the best bunch of flowers, were held. Some useful hints were given in the roll call, " Uses of old newspapers." Hillcrest.—A "husbands and friends" evening proved most enjoyable. The programme consisted of _ competitions, sketches, songs, yodelling, ventriloquism, concertina items, recitations, dancing, etc. A Christmas cake was competed for. - Taupiri.—A competition for a Christmas present not to cost more than Is 6d was held. This was followed by a sketch, " Aunt Mary's Christmas Present." Songs and recitations were also given. Taupo.—A wonderful assortment of toys was brought for the children's Christmas tree party. Mrs. Stott showed a, collection of economically-made Christmas gifts. Te Uku. —A party was given to about 100 children, who each received a gift and sweets. Songs and folk _ dancing were rendered by the school children. Mangapehi. —A demonstration ™ glove making was given by Mrs. Bidwell. The competition was for the most articles in a safety match box. The roll call was a favourite hobby. Community singing was enjoyed. Waitoa.—A birthday party was held in the hall, when a large number of visitors attended from other institutes. A play reading, "My Wife's Relations, proved humorous. Competitions and songs (one in fancy costume) were much appreciated. It was decided to have a court at the Morrinsville Show and to donate two silver thimbles to the school for sewing prizes.
