ABNORMALLY HOT SPELL

SUNSHINE DURING DECEMBER

WELLINGTON, Thursday

December established fresh meteorological records for Wellington, being the hottest December the city has ever known. The mean temperature, 66.26 degrees, was 0.8 degrees above the average. The highest temperature was 83.5 degrees on Christmas Day. Last month was the sunniest ever recorded in Wellington, the hours of bright sunshine totalling 313.7, an average of 10.2 hours per day. The previous sunniest month on record .was January, 1928, when a total of 312.5 hours' sunshine was registered. On no day during last month did the sun fail to shine for several hours. On December 13 there were 14 hours of bright sunshine and on eight other days there was sunshine for 13 hours or more. December's normal sunshine is 226 hours;. During the month only O.oin. of rain fell, making it the second driest December on record. No rain at all fell in December, 1916. Last month was abnormally calm, there being uo galea or strong winds.
