ROADS IN THE NORTH

DAMAGED BRIDGE TAHEKE REPAIRS DELAYED Road communication between Rawene and Kaikohe, in North Auckland, will not be restored until late on Boxing Day, according to the latest advice received by the Automobile Association (Auckland). The blockage has been caused by the destruction of a bridge at Taheke in the recent flqods. Every effort is being made to provide a temporary bridge as soon as possible, but it is doubtful if the work can be finished before about 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Further bad weather may prolong the completion of the bridge. To avoid any delay that might be occasioned by the lack of communication at Taheke, many motorists have elected to tour the east coast on the way north, leaving the Waipoua Forest route for the return journey. Those who have chosen the Waipoua Forest road, however, have not been held up, as the pontoon ferry from Rawene to Kohukohu has provided direct access to Kaitaia from the western side of Taheke. , , Another bridge which suffered at the same time is located on the OkaihauRangiahua section of the Kaitaia main highway, but it is expected that traffic will be able to pass over this point to-day. Heavy intermittent showers fell at Whangarei yesterday, and last night the weather still looked threatening. The rainfall throughout the lower north was not sufficient to cause any serious trouble during the week-end. At Orewa Beach, where reconstruction work is in hand, the surface of the road became very greasy, but a few loads of metal soon remedied the trouble. The recent floods in the North have necessitated a good doal of extra road work in preparing for the rush of holiday traffic. Graders have been working at full pressure and it is hoped that by the time the main volume of tourist traffic reaches the northern districts there will be little cause for complaint.
