SARAWAK STATE
NEW ZEALANDERS IN SERVICE After spending four years in the service of the survey department of the independent State of Sarawak, Mr. D. L. Leach, of Thames, returned by the Niagara yesterday on his first furlough to bis home, which is now at Deep Creek. Striking proof that New Zealanders are by no means behindhand in the task of "taking up the White Man's burden" is given in the fact that there aro six New Zealanclers in the service of the Lands and Survey Department of that out-of'tlie-way and little-known State. These include the superintendent of the department, Mr. N. A. Middlemass, of Auckland, Mr. G. A. Farrelly and Mr. R. G. Sergei, also of Auckland, and Mr. J. L. Noakes, of Thames.
