NEW ZEALAND ROPES
USE AT LONDON DOCKS BREAKING STRAIN TESTS LONDON. Dec. 12 The Port of London Authority will in- future use ropes and cordage made of New Zealand hemp. Experiments have proved that their average breaking strain is equal to that of ropes made of foreign hemp.
After a series of large-scale trials the Admiralty reported last March that New Zealand hemp compared closely with sisal. As the Admiralty's policy is to give preference to Empire products the results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant the partial adoption of New Zealand hemp so long as supplies could be obtained at satisfactory prices and the fibre was sufficiently strong to give the breaking strains demanded in official specifications.
