VOLCANIC ACTIVITY
NGAURUHOE QUIETER SMOKE COLUMNS OBSERVED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] THE CHATEAU. Thursday The clouds and mist which have veiled Mount Ngauruhoe during the past few days cleared away during last night, and the morning dawned fine and clear, revealing that the volcanic activity had lessened considerably. Spasmodic columns of smoke, rising sometimes to a height of 300 ft. issued from tho crater during the day. Nothing more spectacular was seen, and it appears that conditions will soon be normal. However, no parties will do any climbing on the mountain .until Sunday.
