HOUSING IN WELLINGTON

SYNDICATE'S FLATS SCHEME OLD BRICK YARD AS SITE Ln order to meet a shortage of housing in Wellington a local syndicate proposes to build a rectangular block containing forty flats on ari acre section which at present is an old brick yard within the city area. Most of these flats ' would comprise a living room, two bedrooms and kitchen, but several would be larger. The height of the block would be two storeys. Within the block, if the plans be carried out, there will be a central court, including an area 150 ft. by 70ft. set apart for lawns and gardens, these to be maintained permanently by a resident caretaker. If necessary, the syndicate is willing to sign a deed of covenant guaranteeing maintenance in accordance with the City Council's requirements, so that there could be no possibility of the centre deteriorating into a slum area. It is said that, although the syndicate's plans received the approval of an officer ot the City Council, they have not been yet passed by the Bylaws Committee. Every effort is being made to overcome the deadlock, the syndicate asserting willingness to increase the floor space of each proposed flat. In addition to the central court, it is proposed to leave 25ft. clear space on the outei sides of the block in order to give ample daylight to each flat. The syndicate says it is prepared to spend t!2o.000 on the scheme
