THEFT IN A BANK
CHASE IN THE STREET NOTES SCATTERED AND STOLEN After a robbery in a bank at the Haymarket, Sydney, lately, a man was chased and when he was captured banknotes wore thrown away and a crowd of people scrambled for them. Leonard Hines was depositing about £SO in a bank when'a man, who had been loitering in the banking chamber, rushed forward and seized a bundle of 10 £1 banknotes and an envelope containing small change. He ran into the street and Hines gave chase. A constable, who was on point duty, and a detective, who jumped from a moving tram, joined in the chase. The fugitive ran along the footpath, jostling the crowd aside, but he was soon overtaken. A desperate struggle occurred. Banknotes were thrown into the air, and the envelope containing change fell on an awning A crowd gathered and sorambled for the notes. After the suspect had been, secured the police called on the crowd to return the notes, but only two were handed back. A man was subsequently charged with theft.
