BREEDING NOTES

AUCKLAND CUP CANDIDATES LINES OF GAY MARIGOLD POLYDORA AND SOUTHDOWN BY SPEARMINT Racine in the same interest as King March is the brilliant mare Gay Marigold, who has been successful at her last four starts, winning up to one mile and a-quartor, at which distance she defeated the cup candidates Kiltowyn, Master Norval, Gay Broney and others. She is five years old and is a half-sister to King March, by Grand Knight, the handsome son of Grand Parade and Jeunesse, who unfortunately died in 1932 alter serving only about four seasons at the stud. The breeding of Queen March, dam of Gay Marigold, has been fully dealt with in connection with King March, and it was seen that it is replete with etamina from a colonial family that has been very successful in the production of good staying racehorses. It only remains, therefore, to examine the breeding: of Grand Knight and to consider whether it is likely to add to or detract from the undoubted stamina of Gay Marigold's dam. • Grand Knight ' was a very fast horse and won from five furlongs to'a mile and n-lialf. His best wins were the Feilding Stakes, .five furlongs. North Island Challenge St akos. seven furlongs, W.R.C, Summer Handicap, one mile, C.J.C. Great Easter Handicap, seven furlongs, and Great Autumn Handicap, one mile and a-half. Tho last two were won at the same meeting, and lie carried 9.4 in the last-mentioned, which indicates the possession of a modicum of etamina. , Orby's Sporting Descendants Grand Knight's sire and grpndsire,, Grand Parade and Orby, both won the Derby, and his third sire, Orme, would almost assuredly have done so had he not gone wrong 011 the eye of the race, it being suspected at the time by his noble owner that he was deliberately poisoned. Be this as it may. most of the descendants of Orme. and practically all tho descendants of Orby, have been sprinters, and it is difficult to find a stayer among them Grand Parade was somewhat lucky to win tho Derby, as his most formidable opponent, The Panther, was certainly not himself c>n the <lay, and Buchan, who finished second, although he could stay on occasion, was probably at his best at about 10 furlongs, as his two Eclipse Stakes victories testify. Grand Parade won only one race after the Derby, the St. James' Palace Stakes, one mile. He was sire of the brilliant Diophon, who won the. Two Tlimisand Guineas, but could not stay the Derby course. He in turn sired Diolite, whose Tecord was precisely similar. Orme founded a staying line in.France through Flying Fox and Ajax, but most of Flying Fox's other representatives have been sires of sprinters, for example The Welkin • and Cooltrim in Australia and Romeo, in New Zealand. As to Orby, his descendants have been real fliers, and some of the most brilliant, euch as The Boss and Scherzo, have found five furlongs far enough for them. Figures Against Stamina The average distance of races won by Grand Parade's progeny is 8.15 furlongs; by those of his son, Diophion. it is 8.62. Figures for other descendants of Orby are: The Boss, 5.63 furlongs; Golden Boss, 5.92; Flying Orb, 6.34; and Scherzo, 6.53. In New Zealand we have Bambury, a son of Scherzo, and the progeny of Diacquenod. a grandson of Orby, as examples of what I am referring to. Grand Knight's dam was by Polymelue from Joie de Yivre, by Gallinule, and lis is closely related to Mimetic, Joy King, Lackham and Alan Breck. ■ He -comes from the branch of the No. 5 family, which produced Hermit, Steppe. Minoru, Son-in-Law. Seremond, Spearfelt and Repartee (sire of Rivoli). He is sire of Sir Simper, Sir Nigel, Grand' Joy, Clangor, Grand Score and Consummation, in addition to Gay Marigold. Sir Simper failed in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, probably on the score of 6tamina, and one would hardly expect Gay Marigold to do better. The stoutness of the blood on the female side of her pedigree, and of that of her sire, may overcome the Orby influence, but the history of the family is strongly against any' ouch assumption, and about a mile and a-half will probably be about the limit of her capacity. Prospects of Polydora Prior to her breakdown last year Polydora was favourite for the New Zealand Cup, and bad she been able to start eb© would have been one of the hardest to beat. These favourable forecasts were fully substantiated by the stoutness of her breeding lines. She is by, Polazel , from Sweet Smile, by San Francisco from Winning Way, by Cannie Chiel from Lady Wayward, by Bill of Portland from Elusive, by Trenton from Eleusis. by Barcaldine. This is a well-known Clifford family wbich has produced Many winners, including Counterfeit, Miss Mimic, Surveyor and Winning Hit, the last-mentioned being a half-brother, by Autumnus, to Polydora's dam. He won the C.J.C. and Great Northern Derbies, but failed in the Auckland Cup. Cannie Chiel was by Clanranald from Weat'nereye, by Maxim, and won the Wellington .Stake 3. San Francisco was by St. Simon from Isabel, by Plebeian, and was a full-brother to St. Frusquin He wae sire of the dam of Great Star and sired two good stayers in Elevation (C.J.C. Derby and Canterbury Cup) and Malaga (Auckland Cup). Polazel was by Polymelus from Ardazel. by John o' Gaunt from Ardrogena. by Florizel 11. from Ardmore, by Gallinule. This is very stout breeding, Containing three strains of Isonomy. Polazel won on three occasions in amateur cups at two miles, the last time with top weight. 12.2. On her breeding Polydora should stay the distance, but her chances will be discounted by her complete loss of form this season. 'A Son of Rampion A favoured southern candidate is Southdown, a four-year-old son of Rampion and Down South (1), by Wallace—Australia, by Gossoon—Trieste, by Chester—Tempe, by and Blue (imp.), bv Monseigneur. Tempe was a good winner and Trieste won the V.A.T.C. Debutant Stakes. Her brother Titan won good handicaps under heavy weights. Other descendants of White and Blue were Revenue (Melbourne Cup), Gold Medallist (Great Northern Foal Stakes and A.R.C. Royal Stakes, twice, and the best two-year-old of his year, which included Multiform), Lady Medallist' (the best mare of her year in Australia), Carlita tV.R.C. Derby, Oaks, Champion Stakes, etc.). and The Sailor Prince (A.J.C. St. Leger). Wallace was sire of the dams of BobrikcwF, Radnor and Cisco, and was a splendid player and sire of stayers. Gossoon wan by Galopin from Petal, by Hermit from Gardenia, by Macaroni from Arancarja, hnlfeister to Stockwell, Rataplan and King Tom. and. dam of Apremont and Cl amant, fie was sire of the successful New Zealand sire Spalpeen. Rampion was the best two and three-year-old of his respective years and won the Maribyrnong Plate, V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, A.J.C. Champagne Stakes, A.J.C. Derby (beating Limerick), and V.R.C. Derby. He is making good as a sire and one of his recent winners. Strathardale, who won the Kirkham Stakes last Saturday, is looked upon as one of the best two-year-olds in Australia this season. Another is Attract, a two-year-old winner in South Australia. Ramnion is by Roosendalfi from Royal. Pet, by .Your Majesty (St. Leger and Eclipse Stakes), and, bred this way, there is nothing to say that Southdown should not stay the distance. Another Son o! Kilbroney The credentials of this first-class staying sire have been dealt with in connection with Kiltowyn. He is also represented by Gay Broney, who is by Kilbroney—Jolly Gay, by Prince Merriwee—Jolie Fille. by Siult—Merry Maid, by Hotchkiss—Maid of Athol, by MaVbyrnong, tracing to the colonial i>red mare Sappho, who has founded a splendid family in Austrslia, which includes Savanaka (Australian and Sydney Cups), Etra Weenie (V.R.C. Oaks). Merriwee (V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup). Beragoon (V.R.C. and A.J.C. Derbies!, Sir Andrew (A.J.C. St. Leger), Nautical (V.R.C. St. Leger), Wilnri, Traqiiette, Salatis, Midilli and othcrs. Maid of Athol was dam of Scots Grey (C.J.C. Derby). Merry Maid won many races for Mr W. Hundley and Jolie Fillo was a highly-successful country cup winner. Prince Merriwee was a mod«ate performer, but was bred the right way. being by Merriwee (see above) from Quiltina, by Quilt, a son of Robinson Crusoe and Patch, by Fireworks from Syren, by Fisherman, who was sire of the Auckland Cup winner Mahutongn. Gay Broney is full of staying blood and, if at his best, should make his presence felt at the end of the journey.
