DIVING ACCIDENT

TWO BATHERS COLLIDE GIRL RENDERED INSENSIBLE REMOVAL TO HOSPITAL [by TELEGKArH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] DUNEDIX, Wednesday An unusual accident, involving two bathers, occurred at the Pembroke Wharf, Lake Wanaka. At the time there were a large number of bathers together at the diving board at the end of the wharf. Miss Violet Mouatt, aged 18, who is employed at Mount Barker, had just come to the surface after diving from the springboard when Mr. G. Withnell, who followed her from the diving stage, came into head-on collision with her. Both bathers suffered head injuries. Miss Mouatt was rendered unconscious and parts of her scalp were badly lacerated. Mr. Withnell, although suffering from shock and a severe scalp wound, took the injured girl on his shoulders and carried her up a 10ft. ladder to the jetty, where he rendered assistance until Miss Mouatt was removed to the Cromwell Hospital. After receiving medical attention Mr. Withnell returned to the wharf, where he again showed considerable pluck by jumping off the wharf and rescuing a small boy from drowning.
