RICHMOND CRUISING CLUB FIRST RACE OF THE SEASON r The Richmond Cruising Club opened its season on Saturday afternoon with a general handicap sweepstake race, starting and finishing off Ponsonby Wharf. Tlio weather conditions were very favourable for racing, a fresh, south-west, breeze prevailing throughout the afternoon. The competitors included the new 18ft. V class boats Atalanta 11. and Mimic. The winner was the W class boat Wakanui, owned and sailed by B. Kitchener.

On the fall of the last flag Raider, Mahurangi, Atalanta 11., Doris, Martha S., and Sybila crossed the line in the order named. The following were laj,e:—Wakanui, lira; Rebel, 2m; Naniu, 3m; Mimic, OJra. It was a run to the Rona buoy and about half-way across tho now boat Atalanta 11., in the charge of i). Rogers, ran into first place, followed by Raider. Rounding the buoy the order was Atalanta 11., Raider, Martha S., Mahurangi, Doris, Wakanui, Sybila. Rebel, Kumu. Mimic was not sailing up to expectations and retired shortly after crossing the starting lino. On the beat to the Pile beacon Martha S. passed Raider, while Wakanui had to give place to Sybila, Rebel and Namu. Passing the wharf on completion of the first round Atalanta 11. had a lead of 1m 19a from Martha S., which led Raider by 9s. Mahurangi followed 23s later, with Namu, Sybila and Wakanui racing within 20s of one another. Atalanta Id. continued her load until approaching the Rona buoy, where she carried away her rudder and retired. Martha S. now went into first position and although she was once headed by Raider she regained her place on the next board. Namu made up a lot of leeway in the second round, passing both Mahurangi and Rebel. The race started at 3.1 p.m. The finishing times were: —Martha S. (l!m), 4h 19m 21s; Raider (Sm), 4h 20m 41s; Namu (sm), 4h 22m 20s; Rebel (Sm), 4h 23m 50s; Mahurangi (7m), 4h 24m 30s; Sybila (95m), 4h 2Gm 455; Doris (Cm), 4h 28m 20s; Wakanui (18m), 4h 2Szn 4Ss. Atalanta H. and Mimic retired. The result on corrected times was:— Wakanui, 1; Raider, 2; Rebel, 3. Messrs. M. Hill, G. E. Laycock, G. Belloc and R. Simons were in charge of the race.

HERNE BAY SAILING CLUB The Heme Bay Junior Sailing Club held a race for its 12ft. and under class on Saturday afternoon. The contest was sailed in n fresh south-west breeze and brought out six competitors, the winner being Kandy Kid, in the charge of Master J. Fairs. Silver Fern was first over the starting line, closely followed by Kandy Kid, Siola, and Nancy, with Valarie and Norena a little later. Kaiuly Kid and Silver Fern made n very close race, only a few seconds in favour of Kandy Kid separating the boats as they passed the Pile beacon. Valarie was third round, Nancy fourth and Norena fifth. On completion of the first round Kandy Kid had a lead of 18s from Silver Fern, which was over 50s ahead of Valarie. Then followed Nancy and Norena some distance further astern. Kandy Kid did well in the second round until on the run homo, when she had the misfortune to carry away her spinnaker halliard and was forced to do without her light sail for the remainder of the course. Silver Fern got her spinnaker drawing very smartly and almost caught Kandy Kid. which, however, crossed the line ahead. Nancy carried away her rudder gudgeon on the run homo and withdrew. Siola also retired.

Tho race started at 2 p.m. The finishing times were:—Kandy Kid (scr), 3h 10m 555; •Silver Fern (scr), 3h 11m lis: Valarie (lm)j 3h 12m 325; Norena (4m), 3h 24m Is.

The result on corrected times was:—Kandy Kid, 1; Silver Fern, 2; Norena, 3.

Captain W. Percy and Mr. W. A. Wilkinson were in charge of the race. Thero was too much wind for the 10 footers and this event was declared off.
