LABOUR DAY WEEK-END

IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER MANY HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS LARGE EXODUS FROM CITY The Labour Day week-end, the success of which can be either made or marred by the weather, should leave few people with cause for complaint should the conditions to-day, which will be observed as a public holiday, be as pleasant as those of yesterday. Scattered showers fell on Saturday, and although many people were considerably inconvenienced, tliosf who had hoped to spend the afternoon picnicking, the rain was not sufficient to cause the postponement of any sporting fixtures. A squally south-west wind resulted in low temperatures being recorded, but early yesterday morning there was a marked improvement in the weather. On Saturday racegoers were catered for by the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting, which opened at Alexandra Park. The meeting attracted a large number of residents from the country districts, as well as from the city. It will conclude to-day. A special train will run to Cambridge to-day for the Waikato Hunt Meeting. Opening of Cricket Season The Auckland Cricket Association's season was opened on Saturday, when a start was made with the senior grade and senior B competition matches. A game that attracted a considerable amount of attention among cricket supporters was that between Ponsonby and King's Old Boys at Eden Park. Other games were played at Eden Park, King's College and North Shore. These matches will be concluded next Saturday. To-day a new series of games will be played. Golfers have much to interest them during the week-end. The Auckland Club began an open amateur tournament on Saturday and this will bo continued to-day. In addition, special fixtures are being conducted by several other clubs, including Maungakiekie. On Saturday afternoon the majority of the bowling clubs officially opened their season and in several cases special tournaments have been arranged today. Labour Day week-end fixtures are also being conducted by a number of the tennis clubs in the city. Other sports attractions on Saturday included a benefit Association football match at Blandford Park, League Charity Day matches at Carlaw Park, and cycling races. s Fixtures which will interest many today will be the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's athletic sports meeting at the Domain, and in the evening the Auckland Boxing Association's tournament at the Town Hall, where the contestants will include the eight Australian boxers who have been touring the Dominion. Popular Excursions The sunny weather yesterday had the effect of bringing many people out into the open who had been deterred by the rain and cold wind of the previous day. Some found their way to the beaches fcr the purpose of sun-bathing and swimming, while others formed picnic parties and journeyed further afield. For many yacht and launch^ wncrs the week-end marked the opening of the season and provided them with an opportunity of cruising about the harbour and the gulf. The excursions arranged by the Railway Department proved even more popular this year than last, over 1100 people leaving Auckland on Saturday for Whangarei, Rotorua, Te Aroha, Waitomo Caves, National Park and intermediate stations. The train which left for Whangarei in the morning carried 180 passengers. Two trains were despatched in the afternoon for Rotorua, with a total of 550 excursionists, while over 360 seats were booked on the train that left for National Park. The Rotorua and "Whangarei trains will return to Auckland to-night, the National Park excursion returning to-morrow morning.
