NEW SEASON COMMENCES / LOW SCORING GENERAL GOOD DAY FOR BOWLERS The new cricket season was opened on Saturday under unfavourable conditions. a cold southerly wind and occasional showers of rain making matters unpleasant for the fielding teams. After heavy rain the wickets were in surprisingly good order and although dead fs ran ml the batsmen. The wickets were of no assistance to fast bowlers and although the spin irundlers obtained turn, batsmen had plenty of time to smother the ball. It was a day on which the value of batsmen who could use their feet was clearly shown. Low scoring was general all round and all matches are in an interesting position. Batting first against- King's Old Boys on the No. 2 wicket at Eden Park Ponsor.by was dismissed for 96. King's replying with 61 for six wickets. On the No. 3 wicket Grafton compiled 161, Parnell making a good reply with 82 for one wicket. At King's College Eden made 125 against Y.M.C.A., the latter storing 20 for no wickets. In the game at North Shore the local team compiled 139 against University, .which replied with 3& for four wickets. Tho highest score of the day was made by G. Ratcliffe (Grafton), 59. The nest best scores were:—H. G. Vivian (Parnell), 45 not out; J. E. Mills (Eden), 34: S. C. Hay (Parnell), 33 not out. The best bowling performance was that of T. Lyon (Y.JI.C.A.), who took feren wickets for 58 runs. The next best averages were: —S. G. Smith (King's Old Boys), five for 29; F. M. Andrewes (King's Old Boys), four for 29; A. W. AlcCov (Parnell), four for 75; F. Goodsir (Parnell). three for 16: J. B. Simpson (Y.M.C.A.), three for 62.
