SUSTENANCE RELIEF
PAYMENT AT HAMILTON INTRODUCTION NEXT WEEK ANNOUNCEMENT BY MINISTER [from our own- correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday The decision of the Unemployment Board to grtuit sustenance relief to certain unemployed men in Hamilton was announced by the Hon. J. A. } oung, acting-Minister of Employment, in Hamilton yesterday. Mr. Young stated that he had discussed the position with the town clerk, Mr. Y\. L. Waddel, the borough engineer. Mr. R. Worley, and the officers of the Labour Department in Hamilton. Difficulties had become apparent in finding suitable relief work for men in the Hamilton district who were classified as 132. The Unemployment Board had therefore decided to introduce sustenance payments in respect of these men as from the week commencing October 29. Sustenance would be paid to Europeans who were classified as B2 and who had been in receipt of Scheme 5 relief for a period of at least 26 weeks. In the first instance, the payments would apply only to those who were over 50. years of age for whom no suitable work could be found, and to men of any age who were unfit for heavy work and for whom no suitable work could be found.
