JUNGLE CONTEST
The Girls' Poem contest, that of putting the story "Black Tiger" into verse was won by ANNIE MOUNTFORT (Age 16), Raetihi Road, Ohakune. Annie's poem, which is printed below, is a good effort, although it holds some mistakes. The other entries often saciificed sense and rhythm in order _to secure a rhyme. Among those deserving of mention are the entries sent in by Helen Osman, Grace Barron, Betty Ray, and Owen Burley. BLACK TIGER Down a jungle track I sped, With branches twining overhead. When stealthy footpads I did hear, Approaching softly from the rear. From the forest path I stept, To see what after me had crept. And lo! along the leafy track, There came a tiger, sleek and black! He was firmly stalking me, As we moved from tree to tree, And I was softly tracking him, Through thickets where the light was dim. Struggling through the tangled mass I made a~ fearful noise, alas! Then springing lightly from a tree, He made a sudden dash at me. Then the jingling of a bell, Awoke us from the jungle s spell, And stroking Tiger's coat of silk, I stood him by his drink of milk! HIDDEN ANIMALS In. the Hidden Animals contest, the greatest number of names of,animals, 20, was found by RAYMOND HILL (Age 11), M.D.G., Whenuapai.
