A NEWSPAPER RACK

Day after day the problem recurs of keeping the daily and weekly newspapers tidy, without putting them out of the reach of the household. In many homes they are left lyino; about on chairs and couches, or poked behind cushions to be out of sight, and wherever they are they are inclined to make the house look untidy. This useful and easily made rack can be hung on the wall to receive papers, leaving them still accessible to the family and obviating the usual search through the house for the elusive journal.

It is mad© of gaily patterned cretonne, with boaverboard or two or three thicknesses of strawboard for stiffening, while gold cord and two gold tassels hold the front of the rack in position. The strawboard may be purchased from any large stationery store, and the assistant will cut it any size required. The back of the rack is 19Vin. by loin, and the front section is 17in. bV llin. *

For covering the boards threequarters of a yard of cretonne will be required, and the same amount of sateen for the lining. The hanger calls for a yard of gold cord and two large gold tassels. Cut the cretonne and sa, teen pieces about -}in. wider on all sides than the cardboard, to allow for the turnings

and for the front piece of the rack cut the lower edge wider to allow for stitching it on to the back section, as shown in the diagram. Join the cretonne and the lining together on the wrong side, leaving, one side unstitched to allow the strawboard to be slipped in. Turn to right side and put the stiffening into place, and ,top sew along the remaining edge of the back section. Stitch the lower edge otr the front section to the back by hand, joining it on liin. from the bottom. Punch two holes in the top corners of each piece 2jin. from the top -md side and draw the gold cord through from the front to the back. Leave sufficient cord to hang the rack to the wall, draw it through the other two holes, and sew the tassels to the ends of the cord. Plug the holes in the back of the rack with small pieces of wood, to stop the cord from pulling too tight.
