BULLFIGHTING IN SPAIN
ATTACK ON " BRUTAL SPORT "
Frank criticism of the bullfight is seen so rarely in the Madrid" Press — exception must be made of El Sol and El Socialista, which refuse even to report this " sport "—that many were surprised to see an article published in the Conservative " A.8.C.," owned by the Marquis Luca. de Tena, an ardent supporter of bullfighting, in which it was said: "When shall we terminate this cruel and brutal sport?"
The article was written by Senor Fernandez Flores, one of Spain s bestknown writers, who was a great- friend of the bullfighter Ignacio Sanchez Mejias, who was recently killed. Senor Fernandez Flores drew attention to a recent bullfight in Corunna, nt which a spectator was killed by a sword knocked out of the ring. The public, he said, showed complete indifference to the fact that a humara life had been lost, and the bullfight was not sven stopped.
