HAM FRIED ON A SLATE
STARTING A .NEW INDUSTRY
A workman in a slate quarry in North Wales found himself without a frying pan when he wanted to cook his harn-and-egg dinner. So lie used a piece of waste slate instead. Then he left it on the fire and forgot about it. As a result, a new kind of economical lightweight concrete has been discovered. The piece of slate expanded in the heat. When it is broken up it can be used with cement to mak? a light form of concrete, such as is used in partitions and house walls. "Its moisture expansion is much lower than that of the usual materials." an official of the Department of the Building Research said "It is easily nailed, and is an excellent key for plaster work."
