STORY COMPETITION

CHRISTMAS SUPPLEMENT HERALD'S PRIZE OFFER A great deal has been done through the years by the New Zealand Herald to foster literary effort through the steady encouragement of local talent. It is not too much to claim that the effect is seen in the development of a group of young writers whose work, growing in competence and skill, is earning wide appreciation, both in the Dominion and overseas. In pursuance of this policy the Herald will again this year hold a short-story competition, open to New Zealand writers, in connection with its Christmas Supplement, for which augmented prize-money has been allotted. Three cash prizes are offered, of £O, £4 and £3 respectively. The winning stories will be published in the Supplement. Any other stories accepted would be published at the usual rates. Stories are not to exceed 3000 words and, subject to this condition, they will be judged on merit, irrespective of length. A New Zealand background will not be regarded as essential. Entries must reach the Herald Office not later than November 3, and be endorsed, " Christmas Story Competition."
