PROGRESSIVE WAIKATO TOWN = JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS RECORD OF FOUNDATION 3 I life,,. 7 ! CUMMER'S LIMITED The House that is Famous for Good Value Sixty years ago two brothers, Messrs. Thomas and Samuel Morrin, of Auckland, purchased 30,000 acres of land situated in the Motumaoho Block No. 2 from the Maoris. The area was roughly bounded by the Piako River in the east, Motumaoho in the west, the Topehoihoi stream in the south, and Mangateparu in the north. Naming the estate " Lockerbie," after the Scottish home of the family from whom the purchasers descended, Messrs. Morrin engaged workmen to fence and clean the area. The homes of these men were built on the site of the area named after the district's enterprising pioneers, so that the name Morrinsville will always be an everoresent record of their foresight. Mr. Thomas Morrin was the moving spirit behind the scheme to form " Lockerbie " into a large sheep and cattle-raising station. He had been associated with many important business and mining enterprises in Auckland and Thames, and was well equipped to control a large undertaking such as the formation of the huge Lockerbie Estate. He specialised in purebred stock and placed on the station the best sheep and Hereford and Shorthorn cattle that money could buy. 30000000000000000000000000 The Founders of Morrinsville BIG SPECIALS 5 Golden Bloom Tea 2/8 per lb. § = Golden Bloom Baking Powder, full 5ize........ Two or three years later the rails had been pushed eastward to Te Aroha—then a booming "goldfield—and southward to Lichfield, reaching out toward Rotorua and its thermal wonderland. In consequence of its central position, Morrinsville is one of the most important railway centres in the Auckland Province. Passenger trains to and from Rotorua, Thames and Taurange pull into its island platform daily. In point of livestock, trucked and untrucked, Morrinsville station is ahead of any other station in the province. The practical development of civic control in Morrinsville began with the constitution of the Town Board in 1908, the initial meeting of the first Town Board being held on February 20 of that year. The Town Board was in existence until 1921, when Morrinsville was created a borough, with Mr. F. J. Marshall as the first Mayor. The present Mayor, Mr. W. T. Osborne, has been in office since 1931. „ / ' When you consider the advantages of Our Jubilee Offer ! SPECIAL DINING ROOM SUITE DRAW-LEAF TABLE SIDEBOARD FOUR CHAIRS £l2/10/. SURELY A JUBILEE OFFER!
