ROAD AND FERRY GRANTS LIQUOR BROUGHT TO DANCES £by telegraph—OWN correspondent] t PAPAROA, Wednesday A meeting of the Otamatea. County Council was held to-day, Mr. E. Coates presiding. A letter was received from the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, stating that a grant of £2OO was being placed on the Supplementary Estimates for the RaupoTikinui ferry slip on a basis of £2 for £1 to put both slips in working order and provide a ferry for the Lower "Wairoa settlements, thus avoiding a long detour bv the bridge at Dargavills. The application had been made on behalf of the Hobson and Otamatea councils, but the Hobson council had since written disclaiming the application, considering that the ferry was not necessary. - A sub-committee was appointed to interview the Hobson council on the matter. In regard to the Whenuanui water supply, it was reported that provision of a grant on a pound for pound basis had been placed on the Supplementary Estimates. The Minister of Public Works wrote advising that £SOO had been provided •for expenditure on the Tokatoka-Mata-kohe road, from Parahi to Matakohe. The Main Highways Board advised that the subsidy on road-sealing had been increased to £3 for £]. A letter was received from the Methodist quarterly meeting stating /liquor was being brought to dances in the district and to the Garrison Hall, which was nnder the jurisdiction of the council, this constituting a serious menace, especially to young people. The council took a serious view of the position, members stating that the evil was causing trouble in other parts of the county. The matter' was referred to the ball * committee, with power to tiike any preventive measures deemed necessary.
