NEWMARKET BOROUGH

FINANCIAL POSITION NEW LOAN PROPOSED The half-yearly financial report presented at a meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last night showed an excess of receipts of £1306 over expenditure. The receipts totalled £17,814, compared with £14,654 for the corresponding period last year, and the expenditure £16,508, compared with £13,732 last year. The rates collected amounted to £10,079, the total struck for the year being £22,375. It was decidod to submit a proposal to the ratepayers to raise a loan of £6OOO for paving all the footpaths in the borough with concrete. The town clerk, Mr. H. Wilson, said no special rates would be necessary as the interest and sinking fund during the first six years would be covered by subsidies* from the Unemployment Board, and the savings effected in the maintenance of the footpaths. The work would provide employment for a number of men at standard ralies of wages. It was decided to spend £lB7 to enable the work in the Sarawai Street reserve to be continued.
