THE LEAGUE CODE

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS RICHMOND TEAM'S SUCCESS NEWTON EASILY DEFEATED The Auckland Rugby League's Stormont Memorial Shield match was won on Saturday by Richmond which defeated Newton by 21 points to 5. Conditions were ideal and a good crowd witnessed some bright play at Cnrlaw Park. Richmond was always the superior team and in the concluding stages outclassed Newton. Richmond thus has won the three competitions, a performance not previously recorded by any one club. The 'trophies include the Fox Memorial Shield for the senior championship, the Roopc Rooster for the knock-out round, and the Stormont Shield for the champion of champions match. Too much kicking was again noticeable on Saturday, especially .with the Newton backs. The score would have been much closer had the Newton backs retained possession. In the first half, Richmond scored two converted tries, and were the better team. Newton managed to get within five points of Richmond soon nfter half-time, but it was a temporary effort. As soon as Cooke was moved to centre the Richmond backs met with a lot of success. Cooke made several nice openings and scored two tries. His first ope was a particularly good effort in which he showed surprising speed. The Newton forwards played a good game, and extended Richmond in the loose. Newton's backs, however, were disappointing and were badly beaten by the Bichmond set. R. Powell played a heady game behind the scrum. His clean pacing was a feature of the game. Fletcher played a good game and was associated with Cooke in several nice passing movements. J. Satherley played a sound game at fullback. C. Satherley and Telford were the best of Richmond's forwards. Lawless was also prominent. Hall and Blaeklaws play?d splendid games for Newton. Stephens and Francis, who played his first game of league, were the best backs. For Richmond tries were scored by Cooke (2), Tetley, Telford and McNeil. C. Satherley converted three tries. Brimble scored for Newton and Brady converted. Mr. W. Simpnon was referea.
