New quarters have been provided for the engineers, and the accommodation on the beat deck previously occupied by them, has been converted into 22 new single-berth cabins, well equipped and furnished in modern style. Thei 'former verandah cafe has been closed in and further cabin accommodation provided there, while a new verandah cafe has been provided on the boat deck. The space above this h»s been .extended and now forms a convenient sun deck. The gymnasium is fitted out with a .rowing machine, mechanical horse and other modern equipment, while forward a new sitting room has been provided. This is panelled in light-toned woods and a novel lighting scheme gives a decidedly pleasing effect. Two compartments in one of the holds ha.ve been altered so as to allow the carriage of chilled beef. - The Mataroa, which is scheduled to leave Southampton on November 2 for Auckland, is undergoing a similar refit while she is in England.
